oris Johnson suffered an awkward encounter on the general election campaign trail today after he was told by a Tory supporter to ‘get Brexit done’ and ‘get ’em out’.
The Prime Minister is campaigning in the north of England ahead of the first TV debate of the election against Jeremy Corbyn in Manchester this evening.
He started his day with a trip to a boxing gym where he was photographed hitting the pads before then taking to the streets to meet voters.
He was filmed having a conversation with a member of the public who started by bemoaning the state of a local park.
He urged Mr Johnson to introduce a dog licencing system to crack down on bad owners.
The conversation then switched to Brexit as Mr Johnson was eventually ushered away by an aide.
The man said to Mr Johnson: ‘I go in that park there every day. It is full of dog poo. It’s terrible. Irresponsible owners.’
Mr Johnson replied: ‘Oh, I see. I see what you mean.’
The man continued: ‘It is only a fiver. Register your dog. It would be a great thing.’
Mr Johnson said: ‘It would be a bit of a cost for people.’
The man replied: ‘They shouldn’t have a dog, should they, if they can’t afford a licence, a fiver, register it.
‘If a dog attacks you. He got stolen off a dog, had a leg ripped off, dog fighters. ‘
Mr Johnson then suggested that a dog licencing system was backed by one of his ministers but that another was opposed to such a way forward.
‘I know that one of our ministers wants to do it and another one is against it,’ he told the man.
‘I will find out.’
The man then concluded as he said: ‘You have got our vote anyway, Mr Johnson. Let’s get Brexit done. Get ’em out.’
Mr Johnson walked away and said: ‘We will do.’
A Tory spokesman told The Mirror that Mr Johnson’s final response was to the point about delivering Brexit.
Earlier in the day Mr Johnson said tonight’s televised showdown against Mr Corbyn represented a ‘great chance to explain why we need to have this election’.
He told ITV: ‘We need to have an election basically because Parliament is blocking Brexit, we need to get Brexit done so we can take forward our agenda for the whole country.’
The Prime Minister said he was ‘excited’ rather than nervous about the debate.
